The Green Blue is excited to announce the launch of the 2024-25 University sailing Sustainability Challenge (USSC), starting on September 1, 2024, and running until February 2025.

The USSC has been encouraging University sailing clubs (USCs) in the UK to adopt sustainable practices since 2015. This year, the Royal Thames Yacht Club joins as a new sponsor, bringing fresh support to the challenge.

With a revamped judging criterion for the 2024-25 Challenge, clubs can now be more creative and flexible in their sustainability efforts. Supported by the British Universities sailing Association (BUSA), the challenge helps USCs become more sustainable by committing to The Green Blue Boating Pledge and selecting focus areas like waste reduction and biodiversity protection.

During the challenge, clubs and their Sustainability Officers complete tasks within their chosen categories and submit evidence to the judging panel. All participating clubs receive a certificate of achievement, and the top four finalists will be awarded prizes at the USSC Awards Ceremony during the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show in February 2025.

The younger generation of sailors are passionate about sustainability, and the USSC provides a platform for them to make a difference. Last year, 14 universities successfully completed the challenge, showcasing their commitment to sustainability. This year, with the support of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, even more participation and impact are expected.
