Mathis Ghio (FRA) and Nia Suardiaz (ESP) have emerged as champions at the WingFoil Racing World Cup China. After a windless final day on Pingtan Island, the results from earlier in the week determined the outcome. Both Ghio and Suardiaz showcased their skills in the opening Marathon Race and excelled in the short course racing of the initial series.

Chinese Competitors Making Rapid Progress

Ghio shared his enthusiasm, stating, “After a summer of training, it was a great experience to compete against the guys, especially in the Marathon Race, and to witness the rising standards.” He noted the impressive performance of the Chinese team, attributing their rapid improvement to their relatively short time in the sport. “Currently, it’s the French and Italians dominating the top 10, but I anticipate that the Chinese will become formidable competitors in the future.” He also congratulated Kamil Manowiecki from Poland for his silver medal achievement and acknowledged Francesco Capuzzo from Italy for clinching a spot on the podium.

Suardiaz Excited to Win Again

Seventeen-year-old Suardiaz expressed her jubilation at winning the women’s competition in her first visit to China, stating, “I’m super stoked to win here. I’m happy with my performance in the long-distance race and how I managed to pull ahead of the other girls. It’s encouraging to see 30 girls competing in our fleet, especially the number of Chinese girls joining the sport.” The reigning World Champion, Maddalena Spanu from Italy, secured silver, while Karolina Kluszczynska from Poland took home bronze. Just off the podium was Emilia Kosti from Greece, who is making significant strides after her summer training.

Foiling in Lighter Winds is Possible

The event proved to be a major stepping stone for many in the 113-strong field. Kamil Manowiecki (POL) finished as the runner-up in the men’s competition, marking his strongest performance since taking up wingfoil racing last October. Manowiecki aims to see wingfoiling achieve Olympic status, believing the sport is prepared, provided participants are ready to embrace lighter wind conditions. “We need to be ready to race in much lower wind,” he suggests. “We can do it already.” He references Balz Mueller from Switzerland as an example of successful foiling in minimal wind conditions.

Celebrating Success on an Inflatable Pikachu

The medallists marked their achievements with an exhilarating ride on a giant inflatable Pikachu, a unique way to celebrate their victories. The circuit will now head to Italy in October for the Wingfoil Racing World Cup Sardinia, where competitors will undoubtedly enhance their skills.
