Firefly Inland Championship 2024 at Bough Beech sailing Club

This year’s Firefly Inlands was a huge success with forty-one double-handers competing in the Championship. It was a fantastic event that saw many students enjoying themselves and learning. Thanks to the schools and UEA for making it a fun occasion.

The sailing was both challenging and enjoyable. The race officer’s preference for a heavily port-favoured line made starting a real challenge, with many boats vying for position within close proximity. OCS (premature start and disqualification) proved to be a major obstacle.

The racing kicked off with an exciting first race where Jono Pank and Freya Phillips were forced over the line, allowing Jason Aldous and Josephine Mason to claim the victory. It was a closely contested race with lots of tactical maneuvering.

The competition continued with different pairs winning races, including Jenny Smallwood Ph.D. and James Ball, and Alex Baxter and Erin Pank who secured their first Inlands race win after finishing second multiple times.

After a weekend of intense racing, Nigel Wakefield and Emily Saunderson emerged as the overall winners. Jono Pank and Freya Phillips claimed second place, with Alex Davey and Stella Davey in third. Special mention goes to the various category winners including Rosie Heydorn and Allegra Fleming, Sophia Johnson, and Jenny Smallwood Ph.D.

The event was hosted excellently by Bough Beech sailing Club on their beautiful waters, providing the perfect setting for thrilling racing action.
