The 2024 iQFOiL Open European Championship began in Cagliari, Sardinia, with 120 athletes ready to race in the stunning Gulf of Poetto. The picturesque setting of the Mediterranean provided a beautiful backdrop for the competition, with clear blue skies and a gentle southerly breeze propelling the sailors onto the water for the first day of racing.
Both the Men’s and Women’s fleets participated in four Slalom races each, offering fast-paced and thrilling racing action. In the Women’s fleet, Poland’s Anastasia Valkevich dominated with three wins, followed closely by British sailors Alice Read and Islay Watson. In the Men’s fleet, Pawel Tarnowsky of Poland took the lead, with Joost Vink (NED) and Adrien Mestre (FRA) close behind.
Looking ahead, more races are scheduled for the following day, with similar weather conditions expected. The wind is forecasted to blow from the southeast at a similar intensity, promising more exciting competition on the water.
