2024 Scottish Skiffs Regatta: Musto Skiffs at Dalgety Bay

Musto Skiffs Shine at Dalgety Bay’s 2024 Scottish Skiffs Regatta

31 August – 1 September 2024

A talented fleet of Musto Skiffs from Scotland and Northern England gathered at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club for an exhilarating weekend of racing on August 31st and September 1st, 2024. The highlight was a thrilling competition consisting of six races, marked by outstanding downwind rides and camaraderie.

Situated on the northern shore of the Firth of Forth, the Dalgety Bay Sailing Club offers stunning views of Inchcolm Island and the City of Edinburgh, creating an ideal backdrop for the event.

This year, the regatta welcomed nine boats, including seven Musto Skiffs and two RS800s, with participants traveling from locations such as Aberdeen, Aviemore, Sunderland, and Tynemouth. The fleet launched just after noon on Saturday under glorious sunny skies and approximately 10 knots of eastward breeze. Racing took place in Inverkeithing Bay, benefitting from a spacious area that was well-protected from the flooding tide.

Saturday Racing Highlights

– **Race 1:** A fierce competition unfolded among Danny Boatman, Euan Hurter, and Jamie Hilton, with lead changes throughout the race. Jamie ultimately secured a lead by the end of the final lap.

– **Race 2:** Similar dynamics characterized the second race. Danny Boatman clinched the top position, closely followed by Jono Shelley, highlighting the intense competition among the top four sailors.

– **Race 3:** With the tide shifting, Euan capitalized on the conditions and demonstrated his skill in wave sailing, finishing first as the wind picked up to around 14 knots.

After a full day of racing, the sailors enjoyed delicious pizza and drinks while soaking in the sun on the terrace before heading to Edinburgh, embracing the vibrant post-festival atmosphere.

Sunday Racing Highlights

A change in weather on Sunday brought grey skies, prompting participants to don winter wetsuits.

– **Race 4:** The fleet launched in 14 knots of wind, with Danny showcasing his speed until an unfortunate swim led to Jono taking the victory, followed closely by Euan.

– **Race 5:** Following another swim, Danny retired, leaving the path open for Jono and Euan to dominate the race.

– **Race 6:** The regatta concluded with a long-distance race designed by the Race Officer. After a challenging course involving a Cardinal buoy near Inchcolm Island, Euan led the pack despite Jamie and Jono facing difficulties in navigating the course correctly.

The final results saw Euan initially triumphing; however, Jono, having sailed the course as intended, was crowned the overall victor.

Back ashore, laughter, and stories filled the air as sailors enjoyed warm showers and cups of tea. A heartfelt prize-giving followed, after which everyone agreed that the true winners were those who made the journey to Dalgety Bay.

The event concluded with immense appreciation for the Dalgety Bay race team and volunteers, whose efforts ensured a stellar racing experience. Special thanks were also given for the event’s photographic documentation.

The Scottish and Northern Musto Skiff fleet’s next stop is Largs SC on September 28th and 29th, where more thrilling action awaits. We hope to see you there!
