5.5 Metre Fleet Returns to Benodet for Scandinavian Gold Cup and World Championships

29 August – 7 September 2024

The International 5.5 Metre fleet will be competing in Benodet, south Brittany, for 10 days of thrilling championship racing, featuring the prestigious 2024 Scandinavian Gold Cup and the 5.5 Metre World Championship.

This marks the eighth occasion the championship has been hosted in Brittany and the sixth time since 1974 at the Yacht Club de l’Odet. Participants include eight boats for the one-boat-per-country Scandinavian Gold Cup, scheduled for August 29-31, alongside 30 entries for the world championship from September 1-7.

The Scandinavian Gold Cup is a historic and highly esteemed trophy in sailing, first raced for in 1919 and awarded to the 5.5 Metre class since 1953.

This year’s competition features an impressive lineup, including the multiple winner Artemis (NOR 57) with Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, and Trond Solli Seather; Aspire (POL 17) with Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemyslaw Gacek, and Edward Wright; and the reigning champions, The Jean Genie (GBR 43) with Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, and Ruairadh Scott.

Last year’s championships took place in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, where teams faced a variety of conditions. This year’s early days in France are expected to present light air challenges, potentially favoring the Swiss-built Wilke hulls that dominate the class.

The Scandinavian Gold Cup’s unique format only counts race wins; non-winners are excluded after the third race, making victory attainable in as few as three races or extending to seven. Alongside the Gold Cup, nine Evolution and Classic boats will compete for the Hanko Cup and the Royal Kaag Classic Cup.

The world championship racing kicks off on September 1, featuring a 10-race series set over five days.
