M32 World Championship at Lake Garda, Italy – Overall Results

2-8 September 2024

With thunderstorms looming, the fleet headed out for an early start, successfully completing five races in 12-15 knots of the northerly Peler wind.

On the final day, Rated X, led by skipper Jake Julien and tactician Keith Swinton, showcased their skill as defending champions by securing the World Championship title with a race to spare. While the rest of the fleet fiercely competed for the silver and bronze medals, celebrations ensued on Rated X.

“It feels incredible, couldn’t have asked for anything better,” said back-to-back champion Jake Julien.

Just behind the winners, a thrilling battle unfolded for the remaining podium spots. Four boats—including Extreme2 with Dan Cheresh and Youngblood with Miles Julien—were all in contention, separated by just three points. The intense final race included dramatic lead changes and strategic maneuvers that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Ultimately, Youngblood clinched the silver medal, standing proudly beside his brother on the podium, while Surge secured the bronze medal after a tightly contested race against Extreme2.

Meanwhile, a competitive struggle for the title of best European team came down to the final race. Cape Crow Vikings, helmed by Håkan Svensson, overcame a challenging start to claim European bragging rights, finishing ahead of Denmark’s Warrer Racing and Italy’s Vitamina. Reflecting on the fleet’s evolution, Håkan noted, “It’s really awesome to see the incredible development of the sport since we began sailing these boats.”

Throughout the four-day championship, one day was lost to thunderstorms. A total of 15 races were completed, with the fleet experiencing three different race areas. The course setup was dynamically adjusted by race officers, optimizing conditions across mid-lake and mountain-side areas to capitalize on morning and afternoon breezes.

As the season concludes for the M32 class, preparations for 2025 begin. The next major event is set for Miami, where the winter series will kick off in January. For the North American summer, Newport, RI will serve as the fleet hub, before returning to Miami in November for the 2025 Worlds. The European fleet is planning a return to Lake Garda and a visit to the home ports of North European owners.
