Kiwi sailors target success at Offshore Double Handed Worlds
Kiwi duo Andrew Hall and Sandra Bees are gearing up to compete in the Offshore Double Handed World Championship in Lorient, France, representing New Zealand. They will be sailing on identical Jeanneau Sun Fast 30s against 22 mixed-gender crews from 16 countries. Despite limited training on the Sun Fast, they are determined to put up a good fight in the race.
The couple, who met on a yacht called the ‘Love Boat’ six years ago, have invested heavily in their campaign and received support from the Auckland sailing community. While Sandra is relatively new to short-handed sailing, Andrew brings extensive offshore racing experience to the table.
Their participation in the championship is not just about this event, but also about launching their new team, Sail IQ Racing. This opportunity opens up a pathway for them to pursue their racing ambitions beyond Lorient and into the future. Additionally, the growth of two-handed sailing shows promise for continued development in the sport.
As they gear up for the upcoming championship, Andrew is already eyeing future races, including the 2025 edition in Cowes. Their ultimate goal is to compete in the Sydney-Hobart with their own boat, showcasing their skills and determination in offshore racing.
Another New Zealand team, Aaron Hume-Merry and Anna Merchant, will also be representing their country at the championship in Lorient. It’s a significant opportunity for both teams to test their abilities on a global stage and gain valuable experience for future racing endeavors.
