Retirement Announcement from ILCA 7 Development Squad Member Luke Ruitenberg

Sail Canada Development Squad Member Luke Ruitenberg, hailing from St. Margaret’s Bay, N.S., has announced his retirement from competitive sailing. Luke started sailing at the age of nine and transitioned to the Laser Standard (ILCA 7) Olympic class after winning the Sail Canada Youth Championships in Laser Radial (ILCA 6) in 2012. Throughout his career, Luke achieved significant successes, including winning the Sail Canada ILCA 7 Senior Championships in 2021 and being the top Canadian in the Gold Fleet at the 2023 and 2024 World Championships.

Despite not qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Luke remains grateful for the support he received from his sponsors, family, friends, and the sailing community. He has now shifted his focus to coaching youth sailors in Nova Scotia while he considers his next steps. Luke’s resilience and determination have been key factors in his journey, and he looks forward to passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of sailors.
