Gene Hinkel was awarded US sailing‘s President’s Award at the 2024 Sonar World Championship held at Noroton Yacht Club in Darien, CT from September 12-15, 2024. Betsy Alison presented the award, highlighting Gene’s dedication to Para sailing and his contributions to the sport over more than 30 years. Known as the “Grandfather of Disabled sailing,” Gene has tirelessly worked to ensure fair competition and support sailors with disabilities. Rich Jepsen, President of US sailing, commended Gene for his selfless devotion to enabling all sailors to compete regardless of physical ability. Gene accepted the award in front of his fellow sailors, praised for his long, illustrious, and meritorious service to Para sailing.
