First Timer’s Guide to the 2000 Class Nationals

The 2000 class Nationals took place from 5-9 August 2024, where sailors Oliver and Elliott Thompson shared their experience. Attending such a large event for the first time can be overwhelming, but they were excited to compete against 45 boats in a competitive fleet.

Arriving in Torbay, they prepared their boat and had a practice session before the official racing started. The first day saw them finish 14th and 9th, with the following days proving to be challenging, but a great learning experience. Despite windy conditions, they adjusted their rig setup and managed to secure a 5th place finish on the final day.

Lessons learned included taking each race as it comes, focusing on small wins, getting out on the course early, and staying clear of tacking battles. The 2000 class is known for its competitive nature and friendly sailors, making it a great class to join for those looking to improve their skills.

Overall, the 2000 Nationals was a memorable journey filled with challenges, learning, and camaraderie. Oliver and Elliott look forward to future events and encourage others to join the 2000 class for a rewarding sailing experience.
