Emirates Team New Zealand Secures Two Points on Day 2 of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta
Emirates Team New Zealand had a highly anticipated but strategically executed performance on Day 2 of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta in Barcelona. With ideal racing conditions, including 30-degree weather and 10-12 knots of southerly wind, the team faced off against key competitors.
It was a scheduled two-race day. The first race featured a showdown against the Challenger of Record, INEOS Britannia. Emirates Team New Zealand showcased their tactical acumen right from the pre-start, effectively dominating the race before it even commenced. As INEOS Britannia made their move, the Kiwis cleverly disengaged, allowing them to slot into a favorable position.
The maneuvering during the race was critical. INEOS Britannia, in an attempt to gain an advantage, elected to gybe first but fell into a trap as Emirates Team New Zealand executed a textbook strategy. The Kiwis hooked into a leeward position, which allowed them to pin their competitors and force them off their foils. By the time the race reached its later stages, Emirates Team New Zealand had built a commanding lead of over 400 meters.
As they approached the final beat, the Kiwis maintained their composure, defending the right side of the course before heading out to the far left boundary. With smart tacking, they finalized their approach to the final windward mark, crossing the line with a winning margin of 52 seconds and a distance advantage of nearly 950 meters.
Ultimately, the first race was dominated by an aggressive pre-start, which skipper Peter Burling acknowledged as crucial. "Getting off the line well is always satisfying," he said. "We were prepared for a tough race, but seizing the opportunity during the pre-start really allowed us to control the situation."
Despite encountering unexpected circumstances that led to the Orient Express Racing Team’s early retirement from the second race, Emirates Team New Zealand still had to complete the pre-start sequence to secure their second point of the day, placing them at the top of the leaderboard.
This event marked a significant step forward for Emirates Team New Zealand as they look to maintain their momentum in the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta.
