Some America’s Cup fans still long for the days when the event was contested in 12 Metres. Though we now thrive in the foiling age, taking a moment to reflect on the stunning designs of the past remains a joy for many.

In Part 1, we explored videos dating from the 1930s to the 1960s. Now, we turn our attention to the 1970s and 1980s in our extensive video collection.

1970s

We begin with a remarkable documentary on the 1970 America’s Cup, which runs for about 40 minutes. Also from that year, another documentary focuses on Bill Ficker, the US skipper.

From 1974, The Grandest Prize chronicles the event in a similar style.

Fast forward to 1979, where Sir James Gilbert Hardy preparing for the 1980 America’s Cup runs for just 5 minutes, offering fewer 12 Metre shots but insights nonetheless.

Early 1980s

Featuring poignant interviews, here is an Australian perspective on the America’s Cup 1980.

Moving into the thrilling year of 1983, we finally see the Americans hand over the Auld Mug to another nation. The main documentary, Australia II and the 1983 America’s Cup Victory, highlights this pivotal moment.

‘The Challenge’ (part 1) and part 2 portray a re-enactment of the 1983 America’s Cup, featuring actors in dramatization.

Canada’s participation that year is also significant. Challenge of the North tells the story, while the Challenge 12 syndicate produced a commemorative video.

Late 1980s

Experience something unique as the Stars & Stripes crew share their campaign experiences from 1986 through song.

The 1987 America’s Cup documentary offers a fascinating look at the technology aboard the boats, featuring insights from the sailors. For instance, at 24m00s, there’s an examination of a trip up the mast and the spreaders.
