Skipper Tak and Sea Lab: Changing Gears
Embarking on a summer South Sound cruise can be a wonderful experience filled with learning and discovery. As we launched our boat, Sea Lab, from Latimer’s Landing near the Harstine Island Bridge, we encountered some challenges. Despite the initial difficulties, we embraced the opportunity for my wife, Tekla, to learn how to run the boat.
With Tekla at the helm, we navigated our way towards Jarrell Cove State Park for our first night on board. This marked a significant milestone in our boating journey together, as Tekla gained valuable experience in skippering the boat. We continued our adventure by heading to Swantown Marina in Olympia, where we enjoyed the vibrant downtown area and the excitement of Olympia Harbor Days.
Our itinerary led us to Carlson Bay, a hidden gem with a beautiful beach on Anderson Island. Despite some reservations about the anchorage, we decided to give it a try and were rewarded with a tranquil evening in a stunning setting. The following night was spent in the bay north of McMicken Island, where we relaxed and enjoyed the company of friends.
Reflecting on our journey back down Pickering Passage, I realized the immense value of this trip. Not only did we discover new destinations and create lasting memories with our friends, but we also strengthened our boating skills and deepened our trust in each other. The experience was priceless and left us eagerly anticipating future adventures in the South Sound.
Dennis, Tekla, and our sailor dog Tim Tim are now based in Case Inlet at Grapeview, eager to continue exploring the wonders of the South Sound.
