After thunderstorms disrupted racing earlier in the week, INEOS Britannia finally resumed competition in Round Robin 2 at the Louis Vuitton Cup. The British Challenger of Record, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron in the 37th America’s Cup, faced off against NYYC American Magic in the day’s first race and Emirates Team New Zealand in the third. Although the commentators deemed the match against American Magic as the “match of the regatta so far,” INEOS Britannia narrowly lost to the Americans and faltered against the Kiwis.

The first race unfolded with plenty of drama, starting at the pre-start where Ben Ainslie and his team seized the initiative over American Magic, who arrived late in the pre-start box. This advantage allowed INEOS Britannia to push their opponents towards the less favorable left side of the course with minimal wind. However, as Britannia gybed to return to the start, they dropped off the foils. Nevertheless, they managed a remarkable recovery, accelerating back into the race on the gun, positioned just behind American Magic at the start line.

The Americans performed strongly in the first leg, pinning INEOS Britannia against the right-hand boundary, leading to a penalty for the British team. By the top gate, American Magic had established a 20-second lead. They extended their advantage to 29 seconds by the end of the first lap, but the tide shifted soon after. INEOS Britannia made significant gains on the third leg, splitting from American Magic and closing the gap to just 16 seconds.

The British team continued to pressure as they moved toward the next gate, executing a timely split that reduced the deficit to 9 seconds. In a dramatic series of maneuvers, both boats sailed along the boundary before converging again, with INEOS Britannia gaining a crucial moment. In the final stages, American Magic experienced a mishap but managed to recover, while INEOS Britannia found themselves in a narrow lead. Ultimately, a slight error in the final gybe, combined with a wind shift favoring the Americans, led to American Magic claiming victory.

Following a closely contested match against the Americans, INEOS Britannia faced Emirates Team New Zealand. Both boats started strong, sharing the lead at various points in the race. However, a critical moment arose when the British team, attempting to gain a lane of clear air, miscalculated and slipped off the foils. The New Zealanders capitalized on this, boosting their lead to over 300 meters, converting to a 24-second gap at the top gate. Despite a valiant effort to stay competitive, a misjudgment in light winds caused the British to lose vital speed and culminated in their defeat.

Reflecting on the day’s races, Ainslie expressed the challenges posed by the light winds, citing a solid performance against the Americans despite the disappointing finish. He acknowledged that while they improved in each race, there were still lessons to learn for future competitions. Currently, INEOS Britannia stands second on the Challengers Leaderboard, with three wins and two losses, as the competition continues with more races scheduled against Swiss and Italian teams in Round Robin 2.
