The final Moth Grand Prix of the season is being hosted this weekend at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. This event promises to be special for several reasons.
One of the highlights is the introduction of the new ‘Blue fleet’ to the Moth class. This fleet targets slightly older design Moths, such as the Mach 2, and will have a separate start with a shorter windward leg. This setup allows racers to compete under similar target times while avoiding the congestion of the main fleet’s start.
For aspiring competitors, the new fleet represents an incredible opportunity for quality racing at an accessible price point, with a good Mach 2 costing less than £4000. Although the Moth class is often dubbed the most expensive dinghy on the market, the ‘Blue fleet’ now offers the most affordable entry-level foil racing available.
While some of the class’s top stars may be absent, the rivalries among the fleet members generate compelling narratives. Key matchups such as Graham Bridle versus Phil Rees and Steve Maclean against John Evans are always intriguing. Both competitors and spectators will be eager to see the outcomes of these contests.
Another notable competitor to watch this weekend is Gareth Davies, who is recovering from a broken rib and punctured lung sustained during the nationals. His quick recovery means he will likely be a strong contender at the front of the fleet.
In addition to the Moths, the new Switch One Design will be making its UK racing debut. This effectively one-design Moth has garnered attention since its unveiling at the dinghy show earlier this year and is set to add excitement to the competition.
This growing fleet includes exceptional talent. Sam Whaley, a National Champion in the Wasp and a seasoned ILCA competitor, is expected to contend for top positions. However, he faces stiff competition from recently crowned Aero world champion Fin Dickinson, who also finished as runner-up to Sam in the Wasp and captured the ILCA National title earlier this summer. The rivalry between these two promises to be compelling. Additionally, Zac Blomely, known for his victories in the 69f class, has the potential to make a significant impact, leveraging his extensive foil experience.
The event is set to be enhanced by a live broadcast from MarineCast Media, a new production company with substantial experience in water sports.
