From August 28 to 31, the stunning Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia will host a remarkable nautical competition that promises to leave a lasting impression on all participants.

Picture a dreamlike landscape: a crystal-clear lake embraced by majestic mountains, with the historic city of Ohrid resting on its shores. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, rich in culture and culinary delights, buzzed with energy as elite sailing teams from across Europe gathered for the Ohrid Match Race 2024, a highlight of the European Match Race Tour.

Organized by the “Match Race Club” of Ohrid and “Nov Veter” of Skopje, this regatta marks a significant milestone in Macedonia’s sporting history, showcasing the first elite sailing event in the country. Eight teams from Macedonia, Spain, Greece, Poland, and France came together to showcase their skills on the serene waters, with a total of 32 competitors ready for an unforgettable three-day contest.

The atmosphere in Ohrid during this event was electric, attracting numerous fans and tourists eager to enjoy the thrilling competition and the natural beauty of the region. Lake Ohrid, situated 700 meters above sea level, provided optimal sailing conditions with consistent winds, allowing the boats to perform at their best.

The competition followed a round-robin format, where teams competed in a series of exhilarating duels. From the start, the tension was palpable, with every team eager to prove their prowess. The Greek team distinguished themselves with impressive skills, dominating the first day of racing.

The racecourse was strategically set up in front of the historic Palace Hotel, which served as the event’s operations center. An official fan zone was established where fans could closely follow the races and engage with fellow sailing enthusiasts. This space fostered camaraderie and a shared passion for the sport, with many sailors exchanging techniques and tips, enhancing the sailing culture in Macedonia.

As the final day approached, competition intensity escalated. Teams were not only vying for victory but also for the honor of representing their countries. Ultimately, it was the French team, led by Timotte Paulette, who emerged victorious, besting his compatriot Beno Dijou in a nail-biting final. Third place was claimed by Greece’s Jordanis Boutcellioglu, who showcased remarkable tactical finesse throughout the tournament.

Among the competitors was the Cigarrán Sailing Team from Baiona’s Monterreal International Yacht Club, sponsored by Cigarrán Abogados, Piensos Lenda, and Torre de Nuñez. This was the first appearance of a Spanish team at such an event in Ohrid. Led by José Cigarrán, the team also included seasoned veterans like Oscar Comesaña, along with strategic minds such as Manuel Martínez and tireless competitor César López, all eager to make their mark.

The Cigarrán Sailing Team’s strong start exemplified their skill and experience. However, fate intervened when skipper José Cigarrán suffered an injury during the 11th match, leading to their unfortunate withdrawal from the competition despite previously achieving a favorable 50% win rate.

Though their participation ended prematurely, the Cigarrán Sailing Team exemplified the competitive spirit and commitment required for high-level sailing. Their presence left a lasting impression on attendees and highlighted the challenges that come with the sport.

The successful execution of the “European Match Race Cup – Ohrid 2024” has firmly established Macedonia and Lake Ohrid on the global sailing map. The organizers achieved not only a world-class event but also fostered an environment of community and camaraderie that will inspire future sailing endeavors in the region. They extend their gratitude to all sailing clubs, volunteers, organizations, local governments, and partners whose support made this memorable event possible.

The resounding success of the event has already prompted preparations for the Match Race 2025.
