British and Spanish media report that Sir Ben Ainslie, the skipper of the INEOS Britannia team, was robbed at knifepoint in Barcelona. The thieves made off with Ainslie’s €20,000 Rolex watch in an incident that has become all too common in the city.
The robbery took place on Saturday night near the Barceloneta Swimming Club, close to the INEOS sports facilities. According to sources, several individuals threatened Ainslie with a knife and violently ripped the watch from his wrist.
The incident was not reported to the police until Monday, following the conclusion of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta. Notably, it was not mentioned during the Opening Media Conference on Wednesday.
Authorities are currently investigating the violent robbery after Ainslie filed a complaint with the police unit associated with the sailing competition. The regional police, known as the Mossos, are responsible for public safety and have intensified their presence along the Barcelona coastline.
In response to the increasing issue of watch thefts in Barcelona, specialized police units have been established. The Mossos’ Titani unit employs plainclothes officers to catch criminals in the act and investigates reported robberies and the gangs involved.
This alarming incident recalls previous warnings given to athletes, such as during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where competitors were reminded to avoid displaying ostentatious wealth or dressing conspicuously to ensure their safety while in public.
