Allen Phantom UK National Championships at Sunderland Yacht Club – Runners and Riders

6-8 September 2024

Why we do it: Prizes, glory, and adulation (adulation and glory not shown) © Mike Webster

In a week’s time, the elite, the keen, and the brilliantly sociable will be arriving at Sunderland for this year’s eagerly anticipated National Championships.

However, I find myself in a state of confusion and upset, taking a moment to recover at the Muzzle & Leash bar. During a recent Zoom meeting with my nationwide team, I learned that the dog track has been replaced by a modern block of flats! After years of placing bets on dog races, I realize I’ve been misled! If I had known, I could have enjoyed the Champagne Bar at Glorious Goodwood long ago. What a disaster!

But let’s get back to what you’re interested in—my predictions for this year’s Nationals. If I mention a sailor worth betting on, I recommend you act quickly! Trust me, I’m a bookie!

Before diving in, a disclaimer: any resemblance between me and Mark ‘Sprucey’ Spruce is purely coincidental and does not reflect any personal judgment or extreme views. No children or animals were harmed in making these predictions, except for some dried chicken bones from a grumpy old Phantom sailor who shall remain nameless.

Now, let’s get started. We have an interesting competitor list this year, with many familiar faces in my top ten predictions. The weather in Sunderland will play a significant role, benefiting some while hindering others. The winds can be unpredictable, and even my sources can’t determine the wind direction, keeping the competition wide open.

As for last year’s impressive winner, Harry Bridden, he has not entered yet, which means we will likely crown a new Champion this year. It would be great to see him again; he’s an exceptional sailor and a true gentleman—he could easily be in my top two if he shows up and the wind is right.

There’s also some chatter about A Couch participating, but nothing has materialized yet. Having transitioned to other, less-competitive classes, his edge may have dulled, but he could still shine socially, and he has the potential to crack the top three.

The Northampton contingent is always strong, and this year might just be theirs. Although Magic Mike Webster won’t be sailing, he’s expected to lend support off the water, which is a bonus for the team spirit.

In age and importance order for my predictions: John Titch Wayling, Rob Cook, Richard Nurse, and Jamie Morgan are all sailing impressively this year.

John Titch Wayling has a new boat (#1504) that embodies fresh enthusiasm. Having transitioned from the OK class, he’s shown consistent speed in various conditions, securing third place at Lee on Solent and second at Burnham. If he has a clean start, expect him to be at the top five; otherwise, he should certainly make the top ten.

Rob Cook, our dedicated class Chairman, has often been the nearly-man but this time looks promising. With developments made in his sails and good performances at key events, there’s something in the air. Plus, his confidence is sky-high in his sparkly Chairman’s jacket. He’s originally from the North East, which should serve him well, and I see him in the top three.

Richard Nurse has updated his set-up with a new boat (#1500) and appears to be sailing faster than ever. He’s known for his excellent downwind performance and all-around skills, placing him firmly in the top five for this event.

Young Jamie Morgan has shown his potential too. Despite sailing under the radar, some have mentioned him as a contender. Jamie, bring me a glass of claret to boost your odds!

The Team/Club prize will likely go to Northampton, while Llandegfedd SC from Wales may also pose a threat due to their returning sailors. Their old leader, Will Willet, is now injury-free, and they possess a wealth of experience in the class.

Remember the name Ben Dancer. He’s been turning heads with impressive upwind speed and considerable skills after sailing in a recent event. He has the potential to finish in the top three if he can master the starts.

Martin Watts from Netley is another formidable presence. Standing tall and with solid tactics from big boat experiences, he flowers in windy conditions and could very well claim the top spot.

Similarly, Jon Rickard from Plymouth not only knows how to navigate the fleet with speed, but also has sharpened his skills with some focused practice. He could outpace many competitors if conditions favor him.

Slayer (Bill Taylor) from the East Coast brings solid experience and all-around performance from his local tidal river, giving him a fair shot at cracking the top ten.

Now, shifting focus to the Midlanders, we must highlight Adam Frogatt, our inland Champion, who excels in lighter winds. I have him in my top ten, with the potential for a top five finish if the weather is cooperative.

Duncan Adams also deserves mention for his quick sailing ability, particularly in less windy conditions. He’s proven himself time and again, so keep an eye out for him.

Jim Hopton makes the cut too. Always sharp and immaculate in his sailing, he stands to be competitive in lighter conditions but may find himself challenged if the wind picks up.

Chris Roberts, another top performer whose accolades in sailing are noteworthy, could make his mark if conditions remain mild and manageable.

Lastly, Wayne Fletcher is a newcomer with impressive credentials from a successful season in the Northern Super Series this year. With exceptional inland skills, let’s see how he holds up against the competition.

The Smith brothers are also worth mentioning, as they’re topping the leaderboard for their region. You’ll need to be on guard when they’re around!

As for the old boys prize, it’s open for competition with the likes of Titch, Jim Hopton, and Chris Roberts all in the running.

With predictions made, let the games begin!
