Boris Herrmann makes a flying start in the Défi Azimut 48h
Boris Herrmann, skipper of Malizia – Seaexplorer, kicked off the Défi Azimut 48h race in impressive foiling conditions. Racing alongside 17 other IMOCA boats, Herrmann is sailing a 455 nautical mile loop in the Atlantic, expected to arrive back in Lorient this Saturday.
The Défi Azimut is a key event in Brittany’s IMOCA calendar, taking place annually over six days. This year’s race serves as the final preparation before the Vendée Globe. Herrmann is navigating in “fake solo” mode, with American sailor Cole Brauer as watch keeper and Antoine Auriol as onboard reporter, ensuring safety but not aiding in performance decisions.
The race started under sunny skies and ideal foiling conditions, with Herrmann and his team swiftly adjusting sails to stay competitive. After passing the island of Groix, the fleet is now heading south on a high-speed course, with strategic decisions and challenging wind conditions ahead.
