Bound for Adventure – Exploring the 48th Parallel in Broughtons

Early on a calm June morning, Johnstone Strait was tranquil as we sipped coffee and reflected on past voyages through this challenging waterway. Our first journey, 46 years ago on a leaky sailboat, left us battling rough seas and seeking refuge in Kelsey Bay. Fast forward to recent trips with Team Wild Card in the Race to Alaska (R2AK), where we navigated through sudden wind increases and challenging conditions, eventually finding ourselves briefly in the lead.

In 2022, with Team Fashionably Late, we encountered logs and debris while navigating Johnstone Strait, using a flashlight to spot potential obstacles and steer clear of danger. Despite some close calls, we made it through unscathed, a testament to quick thinking and teamwork.

Planning our summer voyage to the Broughton Islands began after a conversation with a seasoned cruiser, which sparked our desire to explore this remote and beautiful area. Our sailboat, Cambria, underwent a transformation with a new Yanmar diesel engine, making her ready for the journey ahead.

Setting off on our adventure, we embraced a flexible approach to planning, allowing for spontaneity and adapting to changing weather conditions and unexpected events. As we sailed north, we encountered dolphins and relished the peaceful moments on the water.

Navigating through Seymour Narrows and into the Broughton Islands, we enjoyed time spent with friends, prawning, crabbing, and appreciating the differences between powerboat and sailboat cruising styles. Despite rainy weather, we found comfort in Cambria’s amenities and warm cabin.

As our journey continued, we experienced the thrill of sailing on Johnstone Strait, encountering killer whales and arriving at scenic destinations like Shoal Bay. Dock parties and shared stories with fellow boaters added a sense of camaraderie to our trip.

After exploring the Broughtons, we made our way back south through Dent Rapids and into Desolation Sound, where we reunited with friends and savored relaxing days on the water. As our voyage neared its end, we reflected on the beauty of the Northwest and the joy of cruising in this stunning region.

Returning home to Anacortes, we felt grateful for the memories made and the experiences shared on our three-week journey. Looking ahead, we plan to continue exploring the diverse waters of the Pacific Northwest, embracing the balance of adventure and relaxation that cruising offers.

In the end, our voyage reminded us of the unique opportunities for exploration and discovery that the Northwest provides, from remote anchorages to thriving marinas. Whether racing in events like R2AK or leisurely cruising the coast, the waters of the Northwest offer endless possibilities for boaters to enjoy the best of both worlds.
