Portishead cruising Club recently held its annual Holms Race, a popular event in the Bristol Channel sailing calendar. The race, which took place on 28th September, featured a challenging course starting in Portishead and rounding the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm before returning to Portishead.
Yacht crews had to predict their start time based on reaching the islands at slack water, adding an extra level of skill to the competition. With 36 boats participating, the early morning start saw crews locking out of Portishead Marina before making their way to the start line.
Despite light wind conditions, the fleet navigated the course with some challenges, including dropping winds and wind holes. In the end, 21 boats completed the full course, with Barefoot, a Sweden Yachts 340 skippered by Simon Thomas, claiming the overall victory based on the PY handicap system.
Additional awards were given to the IRC boat winner and the top club, with PCC retaining the Bristol Channel yachting Association rose bowl for the ‘Top Club’. Full results can be found on the Portishead cruising Club website. The success of the race was attributed to the Race Control team, competitors, and sponsors Boatfolk and Advance Marine.
