Caterina Banti, a 37-year-old Italian sailor and two-time Olympic gold medalist in the Nacra 17 class, has announced her retirement from competitive sailing. Banti achieved her second Olympic gold alongside her teammate Ruggero Tita, marking a triumphant conclusion to her athletic career.

Reflecting on her decision, Banti stated, “The gold I won at the last Olympics paired with Ruggero Tita was the best possible way to end my career as an athlete. I made this decision a few months ago and have no regrets. Now, I need to think about my next steps in life.” During her conversation with Radio Sportiva, she shared that Tita was aware of her decision prior to the announcement.

Banti recounted the pressure leading up to the Olympics in Marseille, where many expected them to defend their title: “We were aware of the expectations, but nothing is guaranteed. We performed well.” She also acknowledged that she aimed for her final performance to be the best possible, culminating in their success and the gold medal win.

Since teaming up in 2017, Tita and Banti have dominated the Nacra 17 class, securing six World Championships within eight years. They pioneered innovative techniques for downwind foiling and established themselves as clear leaders in the fleet. Despite their achievements, they faced competition from other strong Italian teams. Even after their victory in the 2020 Worlds, there was intense internal discussion about the nominations for the Tokyo Games. Subsequent challenges arose, including fierce competition during the 2023 Test Event in Marseilles, yet they rose to the occasion, winning the 2023 and 2024 Worlds.

As Banti looks to the future, she shared, “I have a series of ideas and projects, but it’s still premature to discuss them. I would love to remain involved in the world of sport and share the knowledge I’ve gained over the years.” She humorously commented on the distinct differences between her Olympic wins in Tokyo and Marseille, acknowledging both the individual and team growth that came with their experiences.

For sailing enthusiasts, the upcoming Nacra 17 races during the Paris Olympics promise epic competition.
