2024 Rolex Swan Cup: Celebrating Forty Years of Excellence

15-21 September 2024

The Rolex Swan Cup is one of the most prestigious regattas in sailing. It began a remarkable partnership between Rolex and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in 1984.

This collaboration also marked the joining of forces between Rolex and Finnish shipyard Nautor Swan, two brands synonymous with excellence and innovation in the marine world. In 2024, this esteemed event will celebrate its 40th anniversary, welcoming over 100 yachts to showcase their racing skills and camaraderie from 15 to 21 September.

Paul Cayard, the acclaimed American yachtsman and Rolex Testimonee, emphasizes the significance of the event: “The Rolex Swan Cup is one of the most important regattas in yachting. It stands out for uniting three outstanding partners, driven by a commitment to encourage progress and innovation while honoring their heritage.”

Since its inception in 1966, Nautor Swan has produced over 2,350 Swan yachts, ranging from 8.5 to 40 meters (28-131 feet). Each model exemplifies performance, timeless design, technical proficiency, and durability.

Today’s sailing yachts are categorized into three main lines: Maxis like the Swan 108 and 128; performance cruisers such as the Swan 48 MKII and 65; and the ClubSwan racing yachts which include the notable ClubSwan 80, ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 36, plus the latest models, ClubSwan 43 and ClubSwan 28. These competitive designs have garnered significant respect among some of the world’s top sailors.

Renowned Brazilian yachtsman and Rolex Testimonee Robert Scheidt, a five-time Olympic medallist, previously tactician on a ClubSwan 50, shares: “The Rolex Swan Cup is an extraordinary event that draws sailors from diverse backgrounds. The new one-design classes promote close racing, enhancing the allure of an already esteemed fleet sailing in a stunning environment.”

Following the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the YCCS and Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda will again provide a spectacular setting for the Rolex Swan Cup. The azure waters, picturesque scenery, and reliable winds create the perfect arena for competition. Participants will engage in five days of racing on a mix of challenging coastal courses and dynamic windward/leeward tracks.

Andrea Recordati, Commodore of the YCCS, notes: “Over the past fifty years, sailors expect a premier racing experience with intense, exciting competition. Our mission is to uphold these high standards.”

Despite the involvement of many elite sailors, the star of the event remains the yachts themselves. Meticulously maintained and presented, they foster pride among their owners and crews. This spirit of camaraderie extends to the water, promoting fair competition throughout the regatta. The onshore social activities also serve to connect the Swan community, allowing participants to share their enthusiasm. Crew members come from various backgrounds, with many boats actively including women in prominent roles, fostering an inclusive atmosphere that enriches the event.

Nautor Group CEO Giovanni Pomati reflects on the enduring appeal: “The Rolex Swan Cup is a historic event that brings together top-tier yachts, dedicated owners, and sailors, along with the established partners YCCS, Rolex, and Nautor Swan. The regatta transcends competition; it embodies a sense of belonging, heritage, innovation, quality, elegance, and reliability.”

Since its inaugural event in 1984, the Rolex Swan Cup has marked a significant chapter in Rolex’s nearly 70-year journey with yachting. It has opened doors to many like-minded organizations passionate about the sport, its traditions, and the sea. The continued success of this tripartite partnership reflects a strong foundation of trust and understanding nurtured from the beginning.
