Contender Open Event at Castle Cove Sailing Club

The Castle Cove Contender open meeting took place on September 14-15, 2024, in Portland harbor, with ideal sailing conditions of blue skies and 10 knots of wind.

The first race saw Gary Langdown take an early lead, followed by James Spikesley and Stuart Jones. Despite a recall flag, it was later discovered that only one boat was over the line at the start.

In the subsequent races, Gary continued to showcase his skill, with notable performances from other sailors like Rob Smith, Ed Presley, and Tom Hooton. After a competitive weekend of racing, Gary emerged as the overall winner, with Tom and James securing second and third places, respectively.

The event was hosted by Castle Cove sailing Club, providing great hospitality to the sailors. The Contender fleet expressed gratitude for another successful weekend of sailing and socializing.

Looking ahead, the fleet has one more event on the calendar for 2024 at Rutland Water sailing Club before gearing up for a packed 2025 season. The schedule includes the World Championships in Florida, UK events starting in March, and the National Championships at Shoreham sailing Club in September. For those unable to attend the Florida event, there will be an opportunity to sail in Lake Garda, Italy in 2025.

Interested sailors are encouraged to join the Contender fleet in 2025, with a range of exciting events lined up. For more information, visit www.sailcontender.org.uk.
