Of the six Solutions that participated in the LLSC Regatta and Solution open meeting, only two were vying for the 2024 Travellers Trophy. Having attended all events this year, Richard Brown from Great Yarmouth & Gorleston YC and Martin Tubb from LLSC were ready to compete for the last trophy of the season.

In Race 1, Martin took the early lead after a successful port-end start. Although Richard briefly led, Martin managed to reclaim his position, winning by 6 seconds. Race 2 saw Richard excel as he tactically navigated the shifts to secure the race.

Race 3 brought a twist when Kathryn Clark led at the windward mark, followed closely by newcomer Stephen Timbey. Unfortunately, Stephen capsized at the wing mark, allowing Martin to advance. After overtaking Kathryn at the last windward mark, Martin clinched his second win and took the overnight lead.

The following morning, Race 4 commenced under less sunny conditions but still featured a decent breeze. Martin continued his strong performance, fending off Richard’s attempts to take the lead. Their duel lasted until the penultimate downwind leg, where Martin managed to navigate through traffic effectively, securing his third victory. Following the lunch break, it became evident that Martin was on track to win the overall title, with Richard needing to dominate both remaining races to change the outcome.

In Race 5, Richard started strong, establishing an unassailable lead. Paul Nix rounded the windward mark in 2nd place, followed by Kathryn. Despite the challenges faced, including a capsize from Paul, Martin couldn’t gain enough ground to shift the competition dynamics.

Race 6 featured intense pre-start maneuvering reminiscent of the America’s Cup. Both Martin and Richard, focused on each other, overlooked the course change and headed to the wrong windward mark. A timely reminder from Paul helped them correct their course, but Kathryn had already rounded the correct mark and ultimately secured the final race win. Martin regained his footing at the right mark ahead of Richard and finished in 2nd place, clinching the overall win and marking his first time receiving the Travellers Trophy in a decade.

Special recognition goes to Mark Fox, who won a box of chocolates and a roll of tape for traveling the furthest with his Solution. However, he faced an unfortunate incident when he accidentally pierced his car’s rear window with the mast during hitching; the roll of tape came in handy for repairs on his long drive back to Lee on Solent.

A heartfelt thanks to PRO Mike Baldwin and his race team for organizing exceptional races in nearly perfect conditions, as well as to everyone at LLSC for hosting another fantastic event.
