Emirates Team New Zealand secured their place in the Preliminary Regatta final after a decisive victory over Alinghi Red Bull Racing at the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta. This crucial race was held in lighter wind conditions, ranging from 7-10 knots, presenting a different challenge compared to previous racing days.
In this important matchup, Emirates Team New Zealand, helmed by Nathan Outteridge, faced off against the Swiss team Alinghi Red Bull Racing. The Kiwis, starting from the port entry, encountered a late entry into the pre-start box, trailing behind their competitors. However, they quickly turned the tide with a split-tack strategy, opting to tack away and take the starboard end of the starting line.
As the race progressed, Emirates Team New Zealand demonstrated exceptional skill in their tacking duel at the center of the course, steadily widening their lead to over 100 meters by the final quarter of the beat. By the first windward mark, their advantage had reached 12 seconds. Alinghi Red Bull was the first to gybe, but as both teams headed down the course, Emirates Team New Zealand extended their lead to over 400 meters, showcasing their superior maneuvering and decision-making.
Race conditions necessitated adjustments, as the Race Committee shortened the legs to 1.45 miles due to decreasing wind speed. Nevertheless, Emirates Team New Zealand maintained exceptional boat handling, reaching impressive speeds of nearly 38 knots at the second windward mark and retaining a lead of about 45 seconds.
As they approached the final windward mark, the Kiwis made a strategic choice to head toward the left side of the course, further extending their lead to one minute and 15 seconds. Their smooth sailing produced a victorious delta of 75 seconds against Alinghi Red Bull Racing, confirming their advancement to the Preliminary Regatta final.
Skipper Peter Burling emphasized the importance of their early positioning at the start line and expressed satisfaction with their performance in the lighter conditions. He highlighted the team’s ongoing learning process in maneuvering their boat effectively.
