America’s Cup: Emirates Team NZ Triumphs with a Walkover Win
After an intense 45-hour repair of their AC75, Taihoro, following a haul-out incident post-racing on Thursday, Emirates Team New Zealand was back on the racecourse in Barcelona. They secured another point against Orient Express Team France, who were unable to start the scheduled race due to equipment issues.
Prior to setting off, the sailing team extended their gratitude and exchanged pats on the back, acknowledging the monumental effort of the shore crew who worked tirelessly to fix the damaged boat in such a short period.
Racing conditions improved from the previous day’s lackluster winds, with an 8-10 knot easterly breeze prevailing on what was dubbed ‘Super Saturday,’ a day filled with a planned six races to compensate for the missed events due to calm conditions yesterday.
While the schedule was ambitious, the 6th and final race against Alinghi Red Bull Racing could not be finished and is now set to take place tomorrow.

The race was a speed test for the French team, while it served as a structural boat test for the returning Kiwis. Unfortunately, the French faced disaster at the start as they encountered issues and failed to enter the start box.
For the Kiwis, the situation allowed them to give their AC75 a thorough shake-down unopposed, and they appeared to be in great form. Just as Emirates Team New Zealand prepared to start, the Race Committee received word that Orient Express had retired from the race, awarding the victory to the Kiwis.

Although the team couldn’t complete a full race, there was still much to celebrate. Team member Sam Meech shared, “It was a long, hot day out there, but unbelievable to get the boat back out on the water. The boat is performing as it always has, and we’re pretty happy with its performance. It was just good to be back out there and go through our day. We’ll get ready for tomorrow and can’t wait to race.”
Despite the low level of action, it was a positive day for Emirates Team New Zealand, marking their return to the water after several busy days in the boat shed.
The Race Committee aims to complete the first-round robin races tomorrow, with a more favorable forecast of 9-12 knots easterly winds expected.
