Emirates Team New Zealand Triumphs at Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta
Emirates Team New Zealand has emerged victorious in the highly competitive Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta. A challenging day was characterized by a Mistral wind from the north, which increased sea states up to 1.1 meters and provided breezes of 10 to 13 knots from the east.
Having already qualified for the final, Emirates Team New Zealand faced off against American Magic in their opening race. This match was keenly anticipated, especially after American Magic had dealt with tactical issues, including rudder damage sustained in a previous race.
Like many races throughout the regatta, the outcome of this matchup hinged on the start and the first cross. Emirates Team New Zealand, starting windward of American Magic, opted to tack off to the right side of the course. However, American Magic capitalized on a beneficial left-hand shift, which made it difficult for the Kiwis to catch up. Helmsman Nathan Outteridge noted, “American Magic sailed really well; they had a good start, and we were keen to get out to the right side of the course, but unfortunately, they got a nice left shift off the line.”
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the eagerly awaited final between Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, both of which finished the round robin on equal points.
During the final, both teams were under immense pressure to perform well. Nathan Outteridge helmed ‘Taihoro’ and entered the starting box just a second late, allowing Jimmy Spithill of Luna Rossa to come in four seconds late. As the Kiwis ventured towards the right of the box, the Italians trailed behind. However, a penalty was called on Luna Rossa following a close encounter, which rattled their performance.
Emirates Team New Zealand executed tactical maneuvers expertly, establishing an early lead of 100 meters, which quickly grew to 200 meters as they adeptly navigated the wind-shadow effect. Upon rounding the first windward mark, the Kiwis enjoyed a 22-second advantage and extended this lead to nearly 400 meters by the first leeward gate.
As the race continued, Luna Rossa struggled to catch up, while Emirates Team New Zealand maintained its rhythm, demonstrating impressive control in the challenging conditions. With a lead of just six seconds at the final windward mark, the competition remained tight. However, Emirates Team New Zealand’s impressive sailing skills enabled them to round the final mark with an 11-second lead.
As they sped toward the finish line, Emirates Team New Zealand made strategic decisions, spotting pressure on the right side of the course and minimizing their maneuvering. This brilliant call secured their victory in the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta by a winning delta of 34 seconds.
While celebrating their win, the team acknowledged the challenges they faced during the races. Skipper Peter Burling remarked, “It definitely wasn’t our prettiest work… but we are absolutely stoked to walk away with that one.” Nathan Outteridge echoed this sentiment, reflecting on their performance and emphasizing the importance of reviewing their tactics moving forward.
