Expert Race Committee Designs Course for 45th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

World-class Race Committee Prepares for the 45th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

March 6-9, 2025

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has a rich history of welcoming more than 100 international boats, offering fantastic yacht-spotting opportunities both on the water and ashore.

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is preparing to celebrate its 45th anniversary alongside Heineken, its long-time partner. As the most-attended regatta in the Caribbean, planning is already in full swing, with the Notice of Race available for the upcoming event scheduled for March 6-9, 2025.

Race Director David Sprague, former World Sailing Director and Olympic Games Deputy Race Officer, returns to lead a top-tier race committee and jury. The Regatta, featuring a fleet of over 100 international boats—from maxis to sportsboats, multihulls to monohulls—ensures an exciting racing experience for both racers and cruisers.

With two separate race committees and designated racing areas, the event manages to distribute its extensive fleet effectively. On some days, there can still be over 15 starts per start boat, creating thrilling racing opportunities. According to Race Director David Sprague, the combinations of racing and cruising boats present a unique challenge that allows their expert race committee to craft ideal courses that highlight the stunning landscapes of St. Maarten.

The previous edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta was a tremendous success, attracting sailors from around the globe to the beautiful waters surrounding St. Maarten. Participants from over 20 nations contributed to an atmosphere rich in community spirit and fierce competition, which has become a hallmark of this prestigious event. The regatta’s emphasis on inclusivity and connections across generations has been instrumental in creating a vibrant regatta village and a spirited racing environment.

Generations of Experience at the Helm

The ascension of Cary Byerley as the new Chairman of the event demonstrates a commitment to honoring the regatta’s storied past while positioning for future growth. Cary, a core member of the race committee for the last 20 years, along with her extensive racing experience, embodies the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta’s spirit as they move into the 45th edition.

Joining Cary is Krispijn Teunissen, the newly appointed Regatta Director, known for his successes in local sports events as the leader of the St. Maarten Road Runners. Krispijn brings fresh energy and ideas to the team, ensuring that the Regatta remains an unmatched experience for all participants.

Krispijn and the team are enthusiastic about incorporating feedback from past participants to enhance the regatta village experience. Plans include more sustainability initiatives and innovative ways to connect attendees with the action on the water, creating an unforgettable atmosphere that reflects the true essence of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.

Recent surveys from the 44th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta showed that participants overwhelmingly recognized “the vibes” as a key attraction to the Regatta Village. The lively environment at Port de Plaisance Marina and Hotel, filled with music, entertainment, and camaraderie, fosters connections among sailors, spectators, and music lovers.

“Serious Fun!” for Everyone

A key part of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta’s dedication to inclusivity is the “Island Time” class, designed for cruising boats and liveaboards. This class welcomes families and friends who wish to participate in the Regatta at their own pace. The Notice of Race includes dedicated sections for this class, encouraging boat owners to consider racing. The Island Time class provides an excellent opportunity for those who may not have raced in a while or are competing with novice crew members.

At the previous event, the Island Time class grew to rival traditional racing and bareboat classes, featuring a diverse mix of boats with a shared desire to enjoy “Serious Fun!” Past participants in this class have included Swans, Catalinas, Beneteaus, and even a Clipper 60 ocean race boat. With adjustable scoring, every team has a chance at the podium, fostering friendly competition across this open class.
