INEOS Britannia Secures Race Win in Dramatic Showdown Against Alinghi Red Bull Racing
22-25 August 2024
Skipper Ben Ainslie and his crew had a double race day on Saturday, first competing against the Swiss team and then taking on Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize on their momentum in the second race, receiving two penalties—one for an early start and another for fouling the boundary during the race.
Ainslie expressed satisfaction with the day’s performance, stating, “It was a much more positive day today. We’ve had some really good learnings from the last two days of racing. Although we made some mistakes, particularly the pre-start entry with Luna Rossa, we had a strong race against Alinghi.”
In the pre-start of their first race, Ainslie’s crew made a strategic choice to lead back to the line from a leeward position. This decision proved advantageous, allowing them to close the gap with Alinghi while applying backwash from their sails. The race was tight, with both boats tacking towards the boundaries. INEOS Britannia managed to hold their position until the last moment, tacking with just enough speed to stay on their foils.
As the race progressed, both teams experienced exhilarating speed downwind, with INEOS Britannia ultimately finishing 33 seconds ahead of Alinghi, solidifying their victory.
In the following race against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the stakes were high. The British team unfortunately started just 2.4 meters over the line, incurring a penalty that allowed the Italians to gain a significant early lead. In attempting to recover, they fouled the boundary again, severely limiting their chances for a comeback. With dwindling wind conditions, the race became even more challenging, making it difficult for INEOS Britannia to mount a defense.
Co-Helm Dylan Fletcher commented, “The second race against the Italians was definitely tough. We thought we were safe on that start but we were just a fraction over. Other than that we were happy with the start, but unfortunately after getting a second penalty for being over the boundary, it was very difficult to catch Luna Rossa.”
As they approach the final day of racing, Ainslie remains optimistic. “We’ve taken a lot from these three days of racing and learned a lot about the performance of the boat as well as the maneuvering of it, which puts us in good stead for when the main event starts next week and beyond.”
The concluding day of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta will take place tomorrow at 13:00 BST (14:00 CET), where INEOS Britannia will race against France’s Orient Express Racing Team. UK viewers can catch all the action live, and they are poised to continue building their momentum as the competition heats up ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup starting on 29 August. This series will determine which of the five challenging teams will compete against the Defenders, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match.
