INEOS Britannia Wins Louis Vuitton Cup After Beating Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in 7-4 Victory

INEOS Britannia emerged victorious in a classic final race at the Louis Vuitton Cup in Barcelona, defeating Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli 7-4. This win secures their spot in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match against Defender Emirates Team New Zealand, with racing set to begin on October 12.

Over 60 years since a British yacht competed in the America’s Cup final Match, the achievement of INEOS Britannia is remarkable. The scoreline of 7-4 doesn’t fully capture the intensity of the 11-race duel between the two top Challengers. INEOS Britannia managed to find the edge in boat positioning and speed in the final races, clinching the victory.

The final race in Barcelona featured tight competition in ideal conditions for the AC75 foiling monohulls. INEOS Britannia started strong and maintained a lead over Luna Rossa throughout the race. Despite the Italians’ relentless pursuit, the British team held them off and secured the win with a 17-second lead.

Following their victory, the INEOS Britannia team celebrated with the Louis Vuitton Cup trophy and champagne. Sir Ben Ainslie, skipper and Team Principal, expressed pride in the team’s achievement after a decade of hard work. The Italians, led by Jimmy Spithill, graciously acknowledged the British team’s performance.

INEOS Britannia will officially receive the Louis Vuitton Cup at a ceremony in the Race Village tonight, before turning their focus to the America’s Cup Match against Emirates Team New Zealand. The competition has highlighted the close racing and advanced technology of the AC75 yachts, setting the stage for an exciting showdown for the oldest trophy in international sport.
