ISO Eurocup 2024 at Fraglia Vela Riva
31 July – 3 August 2024
This iconic venue was the perfect stage to celebrate twenty years since the ISO class first travelled to Italy for a Eurocup.
The ISO class remains a vibrant and enjoyable sailing community with over 35 years of tradition, welcoming a diverse range of sailor and boat ages. Participants ranged from 16 to 72 years old, with boats dating back to 1996 and even brand new vessels.
Some teams traveled long distances, arriving on Sunday, 28th July, to take advantage of several days of sailing in this stunning location. The event featured the famous Ora wind, with conditions typically around force 4 gusting 5, providing the perfect breeze for racing.
As the event commenced, the boat yard began to fill with familiar faces, embracing the camaraderie inherent in the sport. It was a heartwarming reminder that sailing fosters friendships that last over time, bringing together both new and seasoned sailors for fun both on the water and ashore.
With teams from Italy, the Netherlands, and Britain, Day 1 kicked off with a 12 noon start. The anticipated Ora winds delivered exhilarating racing, characterized by long beats and thrilling rides back to the leeward mark, ensuring every participant left the water smiling from ear to ear.
The succeeding days began with morning starts due to weather forecasts. Day 2 and Wednesday’s Peler wind presented challenges that tested participants’ skills, resulting in an exciting atmosphere filled with high winds and significant chop—all part of the thrill of sailing. Unfortunately, one team experienced a setback with a capsize, leading to a broken boom.
Racing returned to the water on Friday and Saturday with conditions that truly brought joy to all competitors, validating their efforts of coming to this event.
Congratulations to the winners, Rob Howlett and Henry Collings, alongside Filippo Gatti and Janna, who took second place, and Dave Poupard and Rachel Poupard, who finished third. Bob Ladell and Tom Cave in boat 2504 made a commendable effort coming in fifth despite a day lost due to equipment failure.
