Dutch shipyard KM Yachtbuilders has recently delivered the second 23.5-metre Pelagic 77 yacht, named Amundsen, in tribute to the renowned polar explorer Roald Amundsen. The vessel is scheduled to reach the Falkland Islands by 2025.
Commissioned by the same owner as the first hull, construction on the second unit started in March 2022 with naval architecture by Tony Castro. Amundsen shares a similar aluminium hull and superstructure with her sistership, Vinson of Antarctica, but distinguishes herself with a new environmentally friendly propulsion system.
Unlike Vinson of Antarctica, Amundsen is designed for Arctic cruising and research. The enhancements on Amundsen include increased headroom in the pilothouse, removal of the centreboard from the fixed keel, expanded engine room capacity, and the installation of Volvo engines.
With a 6.2-metre beam, Amundsen sports a striking red boot stripe near the waterline and features two carbon masts equipped with manually operable sail systems. The yacht can accommodate up to eight guests comfortably, with amenities such as a wheelhouse, sitting room, and a fully equipped galley.
Founder of MCM Newport, Peter Wilson, highlighted the improvements on Amundsen, emphasizing the upgrades made to enhance performance and reliability. Polar sailor and commercial director of Pelagic Expeditions, Skip Novak, expressed the success of the first model and the plans to utilize the second Pelagic 77 for educational and ecological purposes.
The decision to build a sistership to Vinson of Antarctica was motivated by the achievements of the original design and its contributions to educational projects. The vessels will support various projects for schools and ventures in the southern hemisphere.
