WANTED: Principal Yachting Instructor at Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club
The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) holds a prestigious reputation as one of the world’s leading yacht clubs, boasting an impressive legacy that spans over 170 years in competitive and social sailing and rowing. The club is renowned for its active yacht racing program, which encompasses inshore, coastal, and offshore racing across its three prime locations. The main venue at Kellett Island features a multidisciplinary setup, complete with a well-equipped boatyard, while Middle Island serves as the training hub for dinghy and rowing, and Shelter Cove primarily caters to cruising sailing.
To enhance our training offerings for our large yachting community, RHKYC is currently seeking a Principal Yachting Instructor to take charge of and further develop the training initiatives previously undertaken by Asia Pacific Yachting Ltd (APY), an affiliate of the club.
This opportunity is open to both Yacht Master Instructors (YMIs) and Cruising Instructors (CIs) who are planning to obtain their YMI within the next 18 months. The selected candidate will step into the role of RYA Principal & Chief Instructor at our RYA-recognised yacht sail training center, building on the success established by APY. This instructor will lead the development of the yacht training program and oversee the delivery of courses, supported by a network of Hong Kong-based YMIs and CIs available for practical course instruction.
RHKYC’s goal is to become Asia’s premier center of excellence for yacht training, aligning with the club’s vision to be recognized as the ultimate yacht club in Asia and one of the best globally for sailing. This position will report directly to the Sailing Manager and play a key role in the club’s strategy.
Job Summary:
- Enhance the club’s programs, positioning RHKYC as a center of excellence for yacht training in Asia.
- Deliver inspiring training both afloat and ashore to meet designated outcomes.
Job Description:
Course Delivery:
- Develop course programs for both ashore and afloat training.
- Coordinate and manage the day-to-day activities of all yacht training sessions.
- Collaborate with local instructors to optimize course volume and types offered.
- Ensure the quality of course delivery meets established standards.
- Assist with administrative tasks, including issuing RYA certificates, managing course bookings, and recording sailing achievements.
Training Course Development:
- Assess training requirements.
- Update and develop course materials for various programs.
- Create an instructor training program to expand the instructor pool.
Course Infrastructure:
- Oversee the serviceability of training equipment to ensure it’s fit for use.
- Predict future equipment needs and lead the procurement process.
Health, Safety, and Safeguarding:
- Enforce health and safety protocols.
- Ensure safe sailing operations comply with RYA regulations and local laws.
- Promote safeguarding practices throughout the organization.
Other Duties:
- Carry out additional reasonable tasks as assigned by the Sailing Manager.
Requirements:
- Strong knowledge of RYA training schemes, with the capability to teach most of the RYA yachting syllabus, preferably with experience in yacht operations and maintenance.
- Must hold an RYA Cruising Instructor qualification with a valid commercial endorsement; YMI qualifications or additional RYA instructor credentials are a plus.
- A minimum of one year’s experience teaching RYA courses for YMI candidates.
- At least three years’ experience delivering RYA courses for CI candidates.
- Proficient in IT.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to inspire and educate students and coworkers.
- Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Proactive in record keeping and task prioritization.
