Lois Berrehar Claims Victory in La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec Leg 1 with Skipper MACIF 2022
Loïs Berrehar, the Skipper of MACIF 2022, has triumphed in Leg 1 of the 55th La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec. In challenging light conditions that tested the sailors’ skills during the final stretch, Berrehar made a strategic choice that allowed him to gain a critical lead as he crossed the finish line first in the race from Le Havre to Gijón.
Having achieved this victory after competing for three days and over 600 miles, Berrehar finished with a remarkable time of 3 days, 21 hours, 58 minutes, and 21 seconds. His average speed during the race was an impressive 7.67 knots, showcasing his exceptional sailing abilities. Only 95 seconds separated him from the next closest competitors, Basile Bourgnon and rookie Jules Ducelier, who claimed second and third places respectively.
Basile Bourgnon, sailing for Edenred, and Berrehar both staged an incredible comeback as they outmaneuvered long-time leader Alexis Loison in the final moments. In near-calm seas, Berrehar executed a crucial gybe that propelled him past Bourgnon and Ducelier, who were within striking distance of snatching victory themselves. This final maneuver proved decisive, affirming Berrehar’s strategy and execution.
At the finish, the intensity among the competitors was palpable, with the first 21 skippers finishing within seven minutes of each other, a testament to the tight competition on the water. Berrehar’s triumph marks his first leg win in six attempts at this prestigious event. Reflecting on his achievement, he noted the challenges he faced, especially in the strategically intricate waters near the Cherbourg Peninsula.
Basile Bourgnon expressed satisfaction despite finishing just over one minute behind, emphasizing the importance of speed and maintaining awareness of competitors throughout the race. With multiple legs still to come, both he and Berrehar have set themselves up for strong finishes overall.
In the Vivi Trophy rankings for skippers from outside France, Tom Dolan from Ireland took the honors, finishing ninth overall. He demonstrated remarkable resilience, improving throughout the race despite facing setbacks and changing positions among his peers.
The Défi Paprec, a new double-handed race that follows Leg 1’s course, was successfully completed by Hugo Le Clech and Arthur Meurisse, who took the victory after more than three days of racing.
