In the pre-start phase, helmsmen Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni demonstrated their exceptional match-racing skills. Just before the race began, Spithill executed a flawless maneuver, forcing the American boat outside the starting line. This forced American Magic to return to the starting point, allowing Luna Rossa to capitalize on the situation. They swiftly maneuvered to the favored side of the course and tactically managed their tacks, maintaining coverage over their opponent and extending their lead. Luna Rossa rounded the first gate with a 17-second advantage.
Despite holding a solid lead, Luna Rossa remained focused throughout the race. They were fully aware that American Magic could capitalize on any minor mistake. In the end, Luna Rossa finished the race with an impressive 40-second advantage, showcasing their control and strategy.
