Luna Rossa Dominates Orient Express and Secures Semifinals Spot in Louis Vuitton Cup Day 6
With the storm that had kept the 37th America’s Cup AC75s on dock yesterday out of the way, racing resumed today under clear skies, with southerly 10-knot winds and much cooler temperatures.
In the second match of the day, Luna Rossa faced off against the French team Orient Express Racing and earned a crucial fifth point among the challengers of the Louis Vuitton Cup, ensuring their access to the semifinals.
MATCH #19 – ITA vs FRA
Starting on the left side of the line, Luna Rossa took control of the French boat during the prestart period and immediately tacked to the right, cutting off their opponents who had extended towards that side of the course. For a few seconds, the boats remained close to each other, but despite a commendable performance from Orient Express, Luna Rossa showcased superior speed. With flawless execution, they increased their lead and rounded the first gate with a 10-second advantage.
On the downwind leg, the gap widened even further. However, maintaining control over the French team proved challenging for the crew, led by Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni. The light and patchy wind created risks with every maneuver, threatening to knock the boat off its foils. Yet, another solid performance from Luna Rossa allowed them to cross the finish line with a victory margin of over a minute, securing their fifth point and a definite spot in the semifinals.
