Maximus Breaks Ibiza to Mallorca Race Record with JoySail

Maximus has set a new racing record in the 2024 edition of Ibiza JoySail, completing the journey from Punta Cala Figuera, Mallorca, to Tagomago Island, Ibiza. The yacht successfully finished the 48-nautical mile passage in an impressive 3 hours and 31 minutes. This year’s regatta, which expanded to four days of coastal racing, has introduced an added challenge for participants to set a record for this specific route.

In the past, the records for this race were established under traditional racing conditions, resulting in moderate times. However, the 2024 version allows crews to select their own time window for the passage, providing an opportunity to plan strategically based on weather conditions, even in the 30 days leading up to the regatta.

On a recent Friday, the Maximus team, led by skipper Lars Loftus, monitored weather models closely as they aimed for a favorable weather window. After a period of anticipation, they decided to begin their journey in the early evening, navigating initially through lighter winds until they reached steadier conditions with an average speed of 14 knots. This careful planning and adept sailing allowed them to secure a remarkable time.

As the team returns to Palma, they are eagerly looking forward to participating in Ibiza JoySail. Loftus expressed excitement about competing against boats of comparable size and appreciates the added benefit of an extended four-day racing schedule, enhancing the thrill of the event.

For the other 19 boats registered for Ibiza JoySail, the opportunity remains to break the record set by Maximus. The window for this challenge will close at midnight on Thursday, September 19.
