New group collaboration has been announced to enhance the safety and environmental impact of the yacht industry. Leading global classification societies DNV, Lloyd’s Register (LR), RINA, Bureau Veritas (BV), and ABS have come together to form the Yacht Safety and Environmental Consortium (YSEC). The consortium aims to improve the safety and environmental performance of yachts over 24 meters in length by leveraging its members’ expertise to support the industry in addressing these challenges during design and operation. The goal is to establish best practices, advise on industry standards, and promote collaboration.
Yachts are not covered by the International Association of Classification Societies, setting them apart from other maritime vessels. The consortium’s collaboration is seen as a way to amplify and accelerate current efforts towards environmental progress and safety within the industry. By working together, the consortium hopes to set new benchmarks and ensure best practices are followed across the industry.
The focus on both environmental performance and safety highlights the importance of developing these aspects in tandem. With the increasing number of accidents in the superyacht fleet, attributed to technologies like lithium-ion batteries, a unified approach is essential in providing clarity and consistency in the yachting industry.
The consortium will appoint a rotating chair and vice chair from the member organizations for two-year terms. YSEC is already working on key initiatives such as environmental indices, tonnage calculations, and load line assessments to foster industry-wide collaboration. The collaboration aims to advance aspects of the industry and address Sustainability challenges with a focus on safety.
As the Superyacht Industry looks towards adopting low or zero-carbon fuels like hydrogen and methanol, ensuring that environmental performance and safety are prioritized will be crucial. The formation of YSEC marks a milestone in the industry’s efforts to enhance safety for workers, guests, and the planet.
