Another successful weekend took place at Ripon sailing Club for the North region’s third Youth & Junior team racing championship on 21 & 22 September. This event, which was initiated to celebrate the North East & Yorkshire youth sailing Association’s (NEYYSA) 40th birthday, attracted 21 teams from across the region. Many sailors participated in team racing for the first time.

Thanks to the support of various sailing clubs and schools, four flights of RS Fevas were available for the event. Rutland SC provided team racing main sails to aid with team identification. The Eric Twiname Trust also played a vital role by providing a grant for the purchase of team racing jibs, enhancing the team racing experience in the region.

The event kicked off on Saturday morning with 92 races completed in a round-robin format to determine the rankings for the following day’s races. Participants, including both experienced team racers and newcomers, engaged in competitive racing while also focusing on skill-building and teamwork.

Coaches and mentors were on hand to guide and support the teams throughout the weekend. The event also provided coaching for new and trainee umpires, ensuring a well-rounded learning experience for all involved.

Throughout the event, volunteers played a crucial role in its smooth operation, with less experienced volunteers paired with experienced individuals. The commentator helped enhance the spectator experience by providing insights and explanations, making the event engaging for all attendees.

Sunday saw teams divided into gold, silver, and bronze fleets based on the previous day’s results. Bronze fleet participants showcased significant improvement, with close and exciting matches entertaining spectators. Silver and gold fleets also delivered thrilling races, showcasing skill and strategy on the water.
