Milestone Achievement: Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona in the Sailing World
4-7 September 2024
The XVII Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona marks a historic occasion in the world of sailing, uniting significant sailing categories under one event. This regatta features the prestigious 12 Metres, P Class, and 15 Metres yachts, embodying a rich nautical tradition that spans decades.
This year, the elite classic yachts have gathered in Barcelona, showcasing unique vessels that can only be experienced during this regatta. The P Class, which debuted in 1903, has only four active sailing vessels: Chips, Corinthian, Joyant, and Olimpian. Meanwhile, the 15 Metres class, which originated in 1909, is represented by three remaining boats: The Lady Anny, Mariska, and Tuiga, with one boat currently out of service.
Additionally, the legendary 12 Metres are making their second appearance at this event after competing for their world title in 2014. These iconic sailboats evoke memories of the America’s Cup from the 1960s to the 1980s, showcasing thrilling match races where manual operation was pivotal to success.
The departure of the classic fleet experienced delays due to a slow wind shift transitioning from a nocturnal land breeze to a Southeast wind. Eventually, the Classic, Gaff and Marconi Epoch, Big Boats, IOR Classics, and Modern Classics fleets commenced their race along a coastal course, with the first buoy positioned off Premiá de Mar.
