Tomorrow’s favorable weather conditions are anticipated to bring a day of nautical competition and splendor for the classics.
The current weather challenges along the Catalan coast have led to the postponement of the Puig Vela Clàssica regatta, which aimed to launch with the first three races of the 12 Metre class.
A storm front has crossed over Barcelona, resulting in substantial rainfall and electrical activity, prompting the race committee to delay the day’s start. After the storm passed around noon, a lack of wind forced the organizers to suspend the scheduled races.
However, this delay has heightened anticipation around the distinguished 12 Metre class of the America’s Cup, as sailing enthusiasts eagerly await its return to Catalan waters. If weather conditions allow, competitions will commence tomorrow, with 77 classic vessels prepared to hoist their sails.
The Real Club Náutico de Barcelona anticipates participation from all categories, including Big Boats, Bermudian and Gaff Rigged Yachts, Classics, Classic IOR, and Modern Classic. The start time is set for 13:00, with hopes for southern winds of light to medium intensity across two race courses.
The 12 Metre Class has a storied history, having participated in the Olympic Games in the early 20th century and playing a pivotal role in the America’s Cup. After a hiatus during the Second World War, the 12 Metres returned to the competition in 1958, marking the beginning of a golden era that spanned nearly three decades.
The America’s Cup editions from 1958 to 1987 showcased renowned vessels like Columbia, Weatherly, and Australia II, establishing a legacy that continues to inspire today. The 12 Metre boats introduced technological advancements, including the use of aluminum for construction, significantly influencing future designs.
A landmark moment in this history occurred in 1983 when Australia II defeated the American defender, marking the first victory for a non-U.S. team. This monumental event opened the door for new challenges and innovations in yacht design.
During this XVII edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta, 12 Metre vessels compete in two distinct categories due to the age difference among the boats. Division B comprises older, wooden boats, featuring the notable Thea (1918). Division A showcases more recent designs, including Kiwi Magic — the first fiberglass boat in the 1987 America’s Cup.
The Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta is an internationally recognized event included in the official calendar of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV). It contributes points to both the II International CIM Championship and the XIII Mare Nostrum Trophy – Spanish Cup of Classic Boats.
