Rod Zemanek: Career Highlights of an 18 Footer Champion

Rod Zemanek, a talented skipper in the world of 18ft Skiffs, may not have the same level of recognition as some other champions, but his sailing career was impactful despite being cut short by business commitments overseas.

Starting in the VJ class and transitioning to 16ft skiffs, Rod quickly made a name for himself, winning championships and honing his skills. In the 18ft skiffs, he found success with his purpose-built Willie B, which featured high aspect sails and a powerful crew that set new trends in skiff sailing.

After a successful stint in the 18s, Rod moved on to leadership roles in sailing associations, including the Flying 11 association. In 2024, he is passionate about preserving the skiff tradition in Australian sailing and hopes to rally support for the development of young skiff sailors.

By encouraging Skiff Clubs to provide training opportunities for youth from all backgrounds, Rod aims to maintain Australia‘s strong presence in competitive sailing and nurture the next generation of skilled sailors and designers.

As the Australian 18 Footers League gears up for the new season, starting with Race 1 of the SIXT Spring Championship on October 13, the legacy of skiff sailing continues to thrive on Sydney Harbour.
