The Royal Yacht Squadron has been confirmed as the Challenger of Record for the 38th America’s Cup. The Cowes based club lodged a Notice of Challenge which was accepted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron after their successful Defence of the 173 year old trophy.
The Royal Yacht Squadron expressed their commitment to working together with Emirates Team New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron on future developments within the Cup. They aim to push for the continuation of the Women’s America’s Cup event and the Youth America’s Cup event, with the hope of incorporating female sailors on Cup boats.
As Challenger of Record, the Royal Yacht Squadron has the exclusive right to negotiate the terms of the next Match with the Defender. They also have approval rights on any changes made to the Protocol or conditions of the Match. Despite the historical trend of no Challenger of Record winning the America’s Cup, the Royal Yacht Squadron is optimistic about their future prospects.
INEOS Britannia backer, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, confirmed continued support for the British America’s Cup team, expressing a desire to keep moving forward towards the goal of winning the Cup. Skipper and Team Principal Sir Ben Ainslie also confirmed ongoing involvement with the team, with plans to find additional backing to elevate the team to the next level.
Former co-helmsman and current Head Of sailing for INEOS Britannia, Giles Scott, expressed pride in the team’s efforts despite falling short in the last hurdle of the America’s Cup. Scott will be moving back into a helming and skipper’s role with the Canada SailGP team.
