RS Aero World Championship at Hayling Island Sailing Club – Preview
26-30 August 2024
175 entries representing 18 countries are arriving at Hayling Island Sailing Club for the 6th RS Aero World Championship. A total of 14 races are planned over 5 days, with Hayling Island promising a variety of challenging wind, wave, and tidal conditions.
All four rig sizes—RS Aero 5, 6, 7, and 9—will be represented, enabling sailors weighing between 45-100 kg and aged 14-70 years to compete with their preferred sail size. The RS Aero 7 features the highest participation with about 72 entries, followed by the RS Aero 5 at approximately 55 entries, achieving gender parity with a near 50% male/female split. Participants will include a mix of previous World medallists, rising stars, and newcomers from other classes.
The Championship will commence with a flag parade celebrating all participating nations, followed by the Welcome and Opening Ceremony. Throughout 2024, the RS Aero Class acknowledges its 10th anniversary, commemorating a decade of impressive growth and enjoyment for sailors globally. A massive 10th anniversary cake will be shared among the 175 entries, marking this as the sixth celebration cake at RS Aero championships this year!
Festivities will not be limited to the water, as Hayling Island Sailing Club features a vibrant clubhouse and exciting parties. Sailors can look forward to recovering from the Saturday Abba band night in time for Monday’s first race. After the opening celebrations on Sunday, the Class dinner will take place on Tuesday. Thursday evening will feature a BBQ and one of Hayling’s famous disco nights. The Championship will conclude with the Grand Awards Ceremony after racing on Friday, August 30th.
We extend our gratitude to all supporters of the RS Aero World Championships! Various sponsors are supporting the event with prizes, supplies, and event support including après sailing drinks.
The RS Aero World Championship will also promote the charity Macmillan Cancer Support through the RS Bike Challenge fundraiser, featuring a raffle for a brand new RS Aero sail provided by RS Sailing. Details of the bike challenge can be found here.
Results will be available in real-time via the Online Notice Board.
