Sanlorenzo has announced the LIFE MYSTIC project, which aims to test engines and generators for superyachts powered by a combination of diesel and methanol. The project, co-funded by the EU and developed in collaboration with Nanni Industries and Ranieri Tonissi, will last 54 months and involve a total investment of over €4.8 million. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fossil energy consumption, and air quality contamination through the use of bi-fuel green methanol-diesel engines and generators.

LIFE MYSTIC will involve the conversion of traditional diesel fuel tanks into methanol tanks and the integration of the distribution system to complete the transition to bi-fuel on a superyacht. The project faces challenges in designing structural methanol tanks and converting endothermic engines to bi-fuel for the first time. Methanol is considered a promising alternative fuel for the maritime industry due to its availability in ports and potential for zero-emission when produced from renewable sources.

Sanlorenzo’s ‘Road to 2030’ initiative, which includes the LIFE MYSTIC project, aims to advance Sustainability in the yachting sector. The project represents a significant step towards technological development and strengthening the alternative-fuel-supply chain in the marine industry. It is part of Sanlorenzo’s efforts to launch the first carbon-neutral vessel by 2030.
