Skipper Tek and Sea Lab: Changing Gears

Embarking on a summer cruise in the South Sound, we launched our boat at Latimer’s Landing near the Harstine Island Bridge at high tide. This marked the beginning of our adventure on our C-Dory 22, Sea Lab. Launching the boat from the trailer posed some challenges, but we managed to get it into the water smoothly.

As we set out, we decided to make this cruise all about my wife, Tekla, learning to run the boat. Despite some initial hesitations, she took the helm and navigated us towards our first stop at Jarrell Cove State Park. It was a milestone moment in our boating journey, as Tekla gained valuable experience and confidence in skippering the boat.

Our itinerary led us to Swantown Marina in Olympia, where we discovered a hidden gem. The marina was well-maintained, and the downtown area offered plenty to explore. We made plans to return for a weekend cruise in the future to fully enjoy all the town had to offer.

Continuing our journey, we ventured to Carlson Bay on Anderson Island, a spot recommended by a friend. Despite some doubts about its suitability as an anchorage, we decided to give it a try. The beach was indeed beautiful, and we enjoyed a peaceful evening surrounded by nature.

Our final night was spent in the bay north of McMicken Island, another favorite spot of ours. It was a night filled with good food, swimming, and stargazing, culminating in a special moment witnessing a Starlink deployment in the sky.

Reflecting on our trip as we headed back towards Latimer’s Landing, we realized the value of this experience. Not only did we explore new destinations and share adventures with friends, but we also deepened our boating skills and trust in each other. It was a journey that brought us closer together and made our time on the water even more enjoyable.

Dennis, Tekla, and our sailor dog Tim Tim are looking forward to further exploring the beauty of the South Sound in Case Inlet at Grapeview.
