Spain Joins SailGP League, Replacing China for Season 2

Spain is set to take the place of China in the second season of the SailGP global league. Despite a solid performance that saw the China SailGP Team finish third in the inaugural season, the team will not continue due to the lack of necessary approvals for its operations. Russell Coutts, the CEO and co-founder of SailGP, stated, “Though the China SailGP Team had a successful first season, we were unfortunately not granted the permissions necessary to continue operating the team within our existing structure.”

In light of ongoing discussions regarding future teams, Coutts expressed gratitude for the opportunity to make an immediate change, ensuring the league can maintain its promise of seven teams for the upcoming season as it expands globally. SailGP remains hopeful about supporting the establishment of a Chinese team and the development of a sailing academy in China, should a suitable agreement be reached in the future.

For the 2020 season, Spain will join the ranks of the defending champion Australia, newcomer Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, and the US. The F50 foiling catamaran previously used by China will now be transferred to the Spanish team.
