Svea and Velsheda Set to Compete at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

The upcoming Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, taking place from September 8-14, 2024, promises a thrilling week of competitive sailing. This year, two renowned J Class yachts, Velsheda and Svea, will participate in mixed fleet handicap divisions alongside some of the world’s finest Maxi yachts.

With brisk northwesterly winds forecasted, competitors can expect challenging conditions. While this might not be ideal preparation for the following month’s J Class Barcelona Regatta, which typically features lighter winds, both teams are eager to race in Porto Cervo, a venue where they have seen past success. Notably, Svea clinched the J Class title two consecutive years.

Svea’s navigator, Steve Hayles, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming races, saying, “For us, it is pretty much business as usual. With the new J Class rule, you have to make your decisions early. We look forward to a solid week of racing in up-range wind conditions. Competing with other boats in coastal racing provides excellent practice, and no matter the outcomes, we always enjoy it. The predicted NW’ly winds will create nice flat water conditions—perfect for racing.”

Meanwhile, Velsheda’s tactician, Tom Dodson, remarked on the invigorating atmosphere of racing in ‘Bomb Alley.’ “It’s fantastic to be J Class racing again. Even though we’re in a mixed fleet this time, our goal is always to win and outperform the other J Class yachts. The initial phase post-start is crucial, and we never tire of racing in this beautiful setting.”

The 2024 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will be hosted by the prestigious Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, in collaboration with the International Maxi Association. Competitors and fans alike can look forward to an exciting showcase of sailing excellence in the stunning waters off Sardinia.
